Instagram comment: You are amazing! Thank you for sharing the truth about hospital births, to invite women to feel empowered to have a birth plan and accept and deny procedures as they wish. You were our light during the last couple of months. Instagram comment: Could not have birthed my baby girl at home without Eyla's support and knowledge. Five-star review from Joanna O.: Eyla provided childbirth education and doula services for my friend and was very knowledgeable and professional but also comforting. I'd definitely recommend Eyla to anyone looking to have a positive pregnancy and birth experience.

Do the math

In the United States, roughly:

1 in 3births ends in a cesarean
1 in 4low-risk, first-time mothers has one
1 in 10babies is born premature
1 in 5women reports symptoms of postpartum depression

The deeply uncomfortable truth is that most of these numbers are preventable.

Sources: CDC National Vital Statistics (cesarean and preterm rates); Joint Commission NTSV cesarean measure; CDC PRAMS (postpartum depressive symptoms).

Where did we go wrong?

For most of human history, birth was community-centered, woman-led, and supported by people who had seen it many times. Then it moved into institutions, and the woman next to the mother stopped being someone who knew.

Ninety-eight percent of women in the United States now give birth in hospitals. Most of them are supported by a partner who is terrified, a nurse with six other patients, and, if they're lucky, a doula trained over a weekend to be kind. So when the room gets tense, when a monitor beeps or a doctor says the word cesarean, the room decides what happens next. The mother leaves feeling that something was done to her, and she carries it into how she mothers, how she trusts her body, and the story her daughter grows up with.

Uncovering Birth exists to change this. The Academy is where we stop accepting what we've all been told about birth and start understanding what is actually possible. For you as a woman. For other women. For families. For children.

What one trained person in the room changes
  • Fewercesarean births
  • Lesspain medication used
  • Fewerwomen describing the birth as a negative experience
  • Betternewborn scores in the first minutes
  • 1h+shorter first stage of labor when she is upright and free to move

Cochrane reviews on continuous support for women during childbirth and on maternal position in the first stage of labour.

The Uncovering Birth difference

A conscious birth builds a conscious world.

Your accreditation lets you be a bridge: to help a woman keep her authority inside a system that isn't going anywhere, with time-tested practice and the evidence to back it. Together we can support a culture with less trauma, more connection, and better birth outcomes.

The benefits of an unmedicated, low-intervention birth
  • An aware mother and baby
  • No medication side effects
  • More mobility in labor
  • Keeps birth safe
  • Shorter recovery
  • Lower risk of cesarean and trauma
  • Greater sovereignty around her experience
01

Deepen personal autonomy

The first woman you're asked to hold space for is yourself. You'll come out of isolation, sharpen your self-awareness, work through what's still stuck, and leave a more embodied, relational woman. It changes every relationship in your life.

02

Support empowered outcomes for your clients

You'll help women think for themselves and feel into themselves, so they make choices they don't regret, and the whole family heals with them.

03

Professional mastery and a business of your own

Master the entire arc of a woman's childbearing year and serve yourself, your loved ones, your community and clients anywhere in the world, with a community behind you.

04

The benefits and access of certification

Hospitals are turning away uncertified doulas. Midwives are asking clients to take certified classes. Insurers are beginning to cover certified postpartum doulas only. An international, IPHM-accredited certification lets you support your clients all the way, including a transfer.

Birth work is an ancient profession you can do anywhere in the world, and as long as people are having babies, the need for your work will never run out.

Who the Academy is for

Four women apply. A fifth didn't know she was one of them.

  • The purpose-driven womanYou want a meaningful career that supports women and families, that you can do from anywhere, that can't be replaced by AI, and where you step forward as a leader and advocate for women.
  • The lifelong learnerYou want to empower yourself and others by understanding the systems that shape us, and to attain a deep knowledge of what shapes all women, which we never learn in school or anywhere else. Eyla has spent more than a decade in this field and is bringing everything she learned firsthand into one place.
  • The practitionerChiropractors, acupuncturists, nurses, therapists, professionals in child development. You already work with women or children and want birth work mastery alongside your primary modality.
  • The working birth professionalYou want an internationally accredited certification so you can stay with your clients if they transfer, and you feel the gap between what you were taught and what the room asks of you.
  • The motherYour own birth changed you, whether it was blissful or it needed to be healed. You know how powerful this passage is and you want to support women through it.
And the woman who wasn't looking for this

You've been circling yoga teacher training, breathwork, nutrition, some way to give back, and nothing has landed. Your friends already call you before they call their doctor. You've been doing this. You just didn't have a name for it, or a license. And if you want to take the training for your own education rather than a career, that's welcome too.

A graduate, in her words

“I first started working with Eyla when I was reconciling some feelings I had about my first birth. I have realized how valuable it is to do all three tracks. There are just so many ways to enter the realms of taking care of mothers and babies, and helping to change whole communities through mother-baby care. It has been truly life saving and really life giving to me. I'm about to have my fourth baby. She has seen me through two and a half births and postpartum experiences, and those have been completely different from my first.”

“Instead of just being someone who offers guidance or coaching, serving as a doula allows me to offer that supportive presence during such a transformational time for the mother and such a critical time for the baby. I realized this was the perfect way for me to serve women in my community. This training helped me grow as an individual so I could really hold space for myself, so I could show up more fully for others.”

Leigh Cameron, Uncovering Birth Doula

“Eyla is absolutely phenomenal. She not only prepares you for supporting your future clients, she also provides great insight on the business side of being a doula. I've been amazed at how quickly I've started seeing paying clients and what a smooth career transition this has been for me.”

Julianna Carbonare, Uncovering Birth Doula and instructor

“Eyla created a multifaceted container for us to learn the detailed physical science, history and energetics of pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum with curiosity and open-mindedness, and taught us how to provide support for each client's unique experience.”

Laura Lee Madigan Glazer

“I've walked away with invaluable information on my offering, as well as actionable advice on successfully growing my own business, which is already unfolding in a very beautiful way. The lessons in this class go much deeper than medical facts. It's helping me become the doula I wish I had during my own pregnancy and birth.”

Alexa Halvorssen, Uncovering Birth Doula

“Simply knowing what I know about birth is vastly different than understanding how to teach it. I am grateful for the opportunity to be guided and mentored by Eyla. I have learned that the way women live life is the way they give birth.”

April Mackert, Uncovering Birth Childbirth Educator

“The training really helped me step into who I am, and step fully into my integrity. I loved the live meetings. Being in group with Eyla and the other women, hearing each other's stories, was really helpful. We were even learning to hold space for one another.”

Samantha Stroud, Uncovering Birth Doula

“She's created such a really strong container from both medical and psycho-somatic perspectives. We are in dire need of more women to support women in this process.”

Stephanie Caruso, Uncovering Birth Doula

“Seven months pregnant with my second and this has given me a new lens and a broader perspective on birth. Eyla touches on the family dyad, attachment styles, and the dynamic of the family, and that's been really important to learn.”

About Eyla Cuenca

I'm Eyla Cuenca: childbirth educator, doula, birth trauma specialist, mother, auto-didact. Since 2013 I've attended over 200 births, at home and in hospitals. Since 2019 I've trained hundreds of doulas worldwide, changing the birth trajectory for thousands of families.

With a BA in Anthropology from Bennington College, I bring a grounded, systems-aware lens to my work. My time serving as a Guardian ad Litem for the foster care system deepened my commitment to advocacy, health freedom and accessible education. Underpinning my method is a passion for understanding family systems and institutional structures, with training in modalities including Dr. Bert Hellinger's family constellations and family systems therapy. The Uncovering Birth Method offers a critical yet compassionate perspective on the way women birth, heal and initiate into expanded versions of themselves.

I believe birth holds the blueprint for healing chronic disconnection, and that empowering education from conception through parenting is a basic human right. What I share inside the Academy took me more than a decade to decode, thread together and master on my own, because so much knowledge around birth has been intentionally obscured for everyone's disempowerment. Now, for the first time, all of it exists in one place. My intention is that you leapfrog my learning curve and use it to take the reins of your own life, and to care for mothers, children and families in a way that is both life-saving and life-giving.

Above all, you are not doing any of this alone. You have the support of our global community and network, and my full support to thrive here.

Welcome to Uncovering Birth.

Frequently asked questions

What women ask before they apply.

Who is this training for?

Women who feel called to support women through the entire arc of pregnancy, birth and postpartum. It's designed for complete beginners and for experienced birth workers wanting a deeper, more holistic and trauma-informed approach to care. No prior experience is required; many students begin with no formal birth work background.

Can I really make a living and build a business as a birth professional?

Yes. Like all of the women who invested themselves fully in this training, you can make a heart-centered profit and a career in this field. A year after Eyla opened her doors as a doula she was booked out and became one of the most sought-after doulas in Miami. Inside the program she shows you exactly how she did it, with real-time, hands-on support as you start seeing paying clients.

It's important to say: with entrepreneurship you get out what you put in. Eyla gives you the roadmap and the framework. The grit and motivation to use them are up to you.

What makes the UB Academy different from other certification programs?

Our method blends practical doula education with emotional intelligence, nervous system awareness, advocacy, ancestral wisdom and deep mentorship. It's about becoming a grounded, embodied support person for women during one of the biggest transitions of their lives, taught live over a year by Eyla herself, with physiology first and real births in practicum.

We also preserve the biological realities and use the terms male and female, father and mother, so that we don't dilute the way we communicate with families by prescribing to political ideologies.

What is the time commitment?

Six to eight hours of coursework per week plus our two-hour live calls. Those who most succeed are sparked by a love of learning and ready to dig into the material.

What if I can't make all the live calls?

All sessions are recorded, so if you have a conflict you'll be able to access the module and follow up with questions in our group chat. We also hold monthly live office hours at a second time to accommodate students in Australia, New Zealand, Asia and the Middle East.

Will you help me find birth clients?

Yes. Coaching on finding clients is included throughout the program, you'll have three business trainings with guest experts, and students receive visibility through the Uncovering Birth practitioner directory while enrolled in the certification membership.

Is the certification internationally valid? Is the program accredited?

Yes. After completing a rigorous accreditation process, the Uncovering Birth Doula Training is internationally accredited through the International Practitioners of Holistic Medicine (IPHM). Your certification is recognized internationally and may be used in any birth setting or country where doulas are legally permitted to practice, which as of now is everywhere.

Why is certification important as a doula?

Over the last decade, many hospitals, birth centers and private midwives have begun requesting proof of current certification from doulas attending births, and insurance companies reimburse only for doulas and birth educators with up-to-date certifications from accredited organizations. At the same time, Eyla believes certifications are ultimately pieces of paper; what matters most is your integrity, presence, wisdom and ability to truly support women. That's why the Uncovering Birth pathway is mentorship-based and practical, designed to keep you at the top of your game rather than just collecting credentials.

Is this training trauma-informed?

Absolutely. The training explores emotional support, nervous system regulation, advocacy, communication and holding space for women through vulnerable transitions. Safety, choice, consent and personal agency are woven throughout the whole program, as principles you experience, not just concepts you learn.

Is it okay if I want to take this for my own education rather than a career?

Absolutely. There is meaningful self-discovery and reflection woven through the year, always gently guided and fully consensual. Many participants experience profound personal insight. Not everyone who takes the training chooses to attend births or teach families, and that's up to you.

Is this training only about birth?

Birth support is the center of the training, and it's one part of the experience, because the way we birth is the way we live. You'll also learn professional practice and the business foundations for a sustainable career, and the year includes a significant personal growth component designed to support you as both a woman and a professional. It is held within a deeply trauma-informed container: safety, choice, consent, nervous system awareness and personal agency are woven through the entire program as principles you experience firsthand.

What is included in the annual certification and membership?

Official annual certification validity, use of the Uncovering Birth certification seal, a practitioner directory listing, the 130-page Birth Doula textbook, the continuing education library, quarterly mentorship calls with Eyla, quarterly guest expert trainings, discounts on future trainings and events, and the private practitioner community with ongoing support from Eyla and the UB team.

What does it cost, and are there payment plans or scholarships?

The Academy is a five-figure investment and Eyla says the number in the video at the top of this page. There is a twelve-month payment plan held in-house. A small number of partial scholarships exist for single mothers; ask about them on your call.

Are refunds available?

No refunds are offered, which is why we interview before we enroll. In rare extenuating circumstances, transfer consideration may be granted with documentation.

If any part of you is feeling imposter syndrome right now

Birth work is your birthright as a woman.

Most women do not realize they are meant for this path until they're in it. I was no exception.

I encourage you to take a moment, sit in stillness, and underneath any fears or doubts, get real with yourself about what you want. The first woman who will be touched by this work, after all, is you.

We create an intentional transition from the program into the work. The community and I are here to support you every step of the way, especially as you start seeing clients, which is why we encourage you to begin working with families while you're still in the program. Every element of your year as a student and graduate is designed to set you up for the greatest success in this profession.

I love birth work because birth is one of the most profound gateways for transformation of the human experience. As you guide women into their knowing, you'll discover that you ultimately get to walk them back to themselves. They discover they already know what to do. So do you.

In support of your purpose,
Eyla
