Birth Doula, Postpartum Doula, and Midwife: Understanding the Difference
Through Eyla’s lens, all three roles exist to support a woman’s journey into motherhood, but they serve very different purposes.
A helpful way to think about it is this:
A midwife provides medical care.
A doula provides emotional, physical, and educational support.
Uncovering Birth connects families with birth and postpartum doulas.
We do not provide midwifery services or medical care.
The Uncovering Birth Perspective
At UB, we believe exceptional maternity care is about more than a healthy birth, it is about a supported mother.
A birth doula brings presence, advocacy, and unwavering support through labor.
A postpartum doula brings nurturing care during the tender transition into motherhood.
Each role serves a unique purpose, but all share the same intention: helping women and families feel safe, informed, empowered, and deeply cared for as they welcome new life into the world.
The Birth Doula
Supporting the Journey Into Birth
A birth doula supports a woman and her family during pregnancy, labor, and birth. Her role is to help parents feel informed, empowered, and emotionally supported as they prepare to welcome their baby.
A birth doula may:
- Help families explore their options and make informed decisions during pregnancy.
- Support the creation of a birth vision or preferences plan.
- Offer emotional reassurance and practical comfort measures during labor.
- Guide breathing, movement, positioning, and relaxation techniques.
- Support partners so they feel confident and involved.
- Create a calm, grounded presence during an often intense and transformative experience.
A birth doula does not replace medical care. Rather, she helps a woman feel seen, heard, and supported within her care team.
At its heart, birth doula support is about helping a woman trust herself. It is someone holding the lantern while she discovers her own strength.
The Postpartum Doula
Supporting the Journey Into Motherhood
While birth support often receives the spotlight, the postpartum period is where many families need the most care.
This support can begin in the first days after birth and continue for weeks or months.
A postpartum doula may:
- Provide emotional support as parents adjust to their new roles.
- Offer evidence-based guidance on newborn care.
- Help establish feeding routines, whether breastfeeding, bottle feeding, or combination feeding.
- Support maternal recovery and encourage rest and nourishment.
- Help families navigate sleep, household rhythms, and daily challenges.
- Create space for parents to process their birth experience.
- Offer practical assistance so families can focus on bonding and healing.
The postpartum doula's role is not to "fix" anything. It is to nurture the family as they find their footing and grow into their new identity.
